I read an article a few months ago that asked if chimpanzees were more like babies or bicycles. What the writer was getting at was whether or not the chimps had "basic rights" or were they property and therefore without rights.

The situation was this...

One animal sanctuary was suing another for custody of two chimps. "the pair were among over 200 animals removed from San Antonio's Primarily Primates Inc. after the facility was sued last year for misusing funds and maintaining unsanitary and dangerous conditions. Now the suit has been settled and PPI is petitioning to reclaim some of the creatures."

It seems that the "foster care" sanctuary wants to keep the chimps on the grounds that returning them to PPI would be similar to returning a child to an abusive home.. They think that the animals' rights should supercede the property rights of the San Antonio sanctuary.

In debating this it's important to note that PPI has spent over $100,000 on rebuilding and improving its facilities and claim that "Emma" and "Jackson" will have wonderful care and "deserve to come back".

Thoughts?

Also consider this... Does it seem more like abuse because the animals are "human-like"?
